At this time of the year, as the Chair, I would normally update you on FAR's Strategic Plan, upcoming Board nominations, and membership activities.  This will happen in a separate communication later this month.

Over the last three years, May has been our "Change of Pace" month when it comes to our luncheon speaker.  This will be the 4th year and we're excited about having Dan Pink talk about his recent book, "To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others."

In keeping with the "Change of Pace" month, I wanted to share a strategy and skill set that I was reminded of during a recent meeting.  As background, I attend about 15 medical conferences and symposia each year where the audiences are pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, oncologists, hematologists, nurses, and related health care professionals. Business Continuity Training and Exercises Are a Critical Part of Your Planning

One of the most common reasons we hear for not conducting business continuity exercises is cost. Once an organization has created a plan, senior management not only feels the job is done but also often is unwilling to spend any more money on business continuity (or simply doesn't have the budget). When your plan is completed and placed on the shelf, however, the job is far from over. You have to make sure the plan will work. It's like fire drills... you don't plan one and never test the escape routes. We have to develop the same attitude about exercising business continuity plans and training everyone in the organization, and we need to begin to include the cost of testing in our business continuity planning budgets. Establishing Effective Internal Communications

Who told you about that new program?  Who signed that agreement and was the CFO involved to determine any potential impacts on financial reporting?  I didn't know that we were holding our 2016 convention in Orlando, did you?  These are all questions that can result from the lack of an effective internal communications plan.  Most organizations devote significant resources to external communication with members, donors, and other constituents through websites and email blasts which deliver real-time relevant information.  Keeping external parties informed is important to ensure the organization is meeting the needs of its members and other interested parties in a timely and effective manner, but what about keeping staff informed so they can better serve your membership?  Although an organization generally has an effective external communication plan, structured, timely and relevant internal communication may be lacking.  We will use the following base-line information from a sample organization as a platform by which to develop a more effective internal communications plan.
