 Chair's Letter
Patricia Adkins Headshot
Our FAR year is well underway with our educational luncheon programs and preparation for our FAR Holiday Luncheon. The success of our "Buy One, Get One" guest option for our FAR members has continued to introduce new non-profits to our organization. Attendance at our monthly luncheons is exceeding 100 members and guests.  We have enjoyed seeing so many new faces and look forward to seeing more.

The new FAR Board started its strategic planning activities in July and held its first Board meeting in September.  We'll be sharing more about our Strategic Plan at our December business meeting and throughout the year.

Our first committee networking event, prior to the October luncheon, helped us ramp up committee membership.  Our FAR committee chairs are organizing their volunteers and getting up to speed for our January through June program topics, planning other educational offerings, focusing on membership recruitment and retention, and considering ways to increase FAR's  visibility within our industry. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact hq@far-roundtable.org.

As your new chair, thank you for all your support and encouragement, as well as your suggestions for making FAR the best organization it can be.

All the best for a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday!

FAR November Luncheon |  Election 2012:  What Lies Ahead for the Nonprofit Community?
The stakes for the nonprofit community are high. Knowing what lies ahead continues to be a challenge and this could be further complicated by who sits in the White House and Congress. Reid Wilson, Editor-in-Chief of National Journal's The Hotline came to share his insight about the impact of the election, the "fiscal cliff", and financial and business issues needing additional analysis.

How Does Charity Navigator Rate Your Organization
by Christian Spencer, CPA, Tate and Tryon, Senior Manager
"It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it."  This quote from Benjamin Franklin, like many of our founding fathers' observations, is perhaps more relevant now than when first spoken over 230 years ago.  Financial mismanagement and a lack of fiduciary responsibility by some nonprofit boards have resulted in individuals and corporations performing a higher level of due diligence prior to making donations.  One of the resources available to donors is Charity Navigator, itself a section 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization,  which runs an online platform to evaluate the financial metrics and accountability practices at certain 501(c)(3) nonprofits.  Although a donor's ultimate decision to support a charity is subjective in nature, nonprofits should become familiar with the rating system used by Charity Navigator, particularly since it is publically available and used on a wide-spread basis.
